Course Content:

Course Goals:
The course is meant to be an introductory experience to Orthopedic Surgery with specific exposure to spine. The student will be actively involved in clinic, in-patient care, and the operating room. The student will learn the basic presentation, evaluation, and management of adult patients with common orthopedic problems, such as spinal stenosis and herniated disc.
Course Objectives:
By the end of this course, students should be able to accomplish the following:  Be able to describe and demonstrate the physical examination of the spine  Be able to identify the imaging characteristics of a lumbar disc herniation, lumbar spinal stenosis and a thoracolumbar compression fracture  Describe the clinical presentation and physical exam findings of patients with spinal stenosis, herniated disc and arthritis of the spine.  Describe the treatment of vertebral compression fractures in the geriatric population.
Evaluation Description:
Students will be evaluated by faculty in formative and summative fashion with a final grade determined by consensus based on student performance of the components shown below. Standard grading forms will be used. History and Physical Exam of Patient-35% Professionalism, e.g. attendance and interest in clinic-30% Ability to accomplish/demonstrate objectives of course-35%

Clinical Responsibilities—M,T,TH,F-7am-5pm W- 8am-4pm Didactic Sessions: M 5:30pm-6:30pm; W 6:30-7:45; F 6:30-7:30 MU Grand Rounds (first Wednesday of the month) - 6:45 - 7:45 a.m. Visiting Professor Grand Rounds (third Wednesday of the month) - 6:30 - 7:30 a.m. Resident Education - Every Thursday at 3 - 6 p.m. Outpatient/Inpatient Student is expected to round on inpatients as directed by senior resident on spine team before and/or after scheduled clinical responsibilities.
